Policy For Consideration - November 2008 Meeting
I am posting this Policy that was introduced at the November meeting. Please give some input on your thoughts. I am also including a link for: TCA 37-1-131 Delinquent Children http://dept.fvtc.edu/ojjdp/tn.pdf
I posted this on the other link, but I think maybe I should put it here.
This is just Lewis' way of trying to keep a public institution paid for by our tax dollars, hidden. If he wasn't trying to hide something why would he make it so hard to see public records that we as taxpayers are paying for in the first place?? I am outraged that he continues to treat parents in this manner. They are paying his salary and he has no respect for them or their children.
And the school should know about Teachers who have been accused of crimes: sexual perversion, groping students, embezzlement, DUI, all felonies and misdemeanors, etc.
And Janitors, Teachers, Cafeteria Workers and Administrative Staff including the Principal, Director of Schools, etc. should have background/criminal checks.
That's the kind of posting that will make change! Thanks for taking the time to share this ghsparent,
Anonymous~ without doing the research to post for you, I feel confident that the school system employees do go through proper background checks, someone correct me if I am wrong. That being said, if I know anything of the situations you refer to, I think it is important that parents remain vigilant in the education of their children about sexual harassment. There is never a circumstance where a teacher should make sexual innuendos, advances, or gestures toward a student, male or female. Now, that being said, teachers should continue to educate themselves about the same things, students have no business doing the same toward teachers and should be corrected and educated when they do. That tangled web goes both ways. Teachers, especially new and younger ones have to remember that no matter how mature a student may appear to be, or in fact be, there is never a place for flirting between students and teachers. Enough about that.
As for the acquiring of "public" records. I have no problem with paying for the cost of copies. What I see as strange is the fact that an attorney is required to provided a legal document that then has to be signed, in order to receive a packet that I believe should be public record. It's not like ghsparent was asking for a student's (not her own) private record. I don't understand all of the red tape at the boe. Does anyone know if this is normal practice or if it is just this county.
Now, for the delinquent child policy. Since the child must be adjudicated as delinquent in order for the BOE to consider them as such and since the offenses listed are so violent and sexual in nature, and since many of the schools in this county have students from K-8 or even 12 attending together, I have more of a problem with the idea that these students would not be attending an alternative school rather than being part of the general population. I would be very uncomfortable knowing that anyone found guilty of one of the listed offenses was in school with my children. I don't think that would be appropriate. That's my take on that. I think if they are that violent they don't need to be in the public school at all, much less in extra curricular activities. I feel that part of their legal punishment should automatically include descriptive, educational provisions based on their personal case.
UPDATE: Just got home from the game... Lewis & Fox better be ready for another visit from some mad parents. GHS, Lewis & Fox get ready for the other shoe to drop. If what a couple of the kids repeated was said to them tonight by the assitant coach and coach is true I would say heads are going to roll on Monday.
Regardless of the quote this is childish and inappropriate on so any levels for any school employee to say to a student. These two women need to grow up, act like adults and stop embarrassing the school district. They had another cheerleader quit yesterday because the coach was constantly putting her down while some are getting preferential treatment. How long is Mr. Lewis going to allow this to go on?
The longer this goes on the more the parents are getting in their favor if they do go legal. Ghsparent ~ KACHING!!!! Now you can add sexual harassment to your claim.
ghsfan, it wasn't taken out of context, as a matter of fact, it was worse than what charley1 said. I just don't get how either of these women think they are going to get away with this. Best thing for Medley and Lewis to do is have both of these women in the office before 8am on Monday. Oh, to be a fly on the wall for that meeting.
paws101, my bet is Medley has had all he is going to put up with from this woman. He won't continue to risk his career and reputation for either of these women. From what I have heard was said to the girls, both coaches will be in the office.
To reiterate! "I think it is important that parents remain vigilant in the education of their children about sexual harassment. There is never a circumstance where a teacher should make sexual innuendos, advances, or gestures toward a student, male or female.
Just wondering.... What type of relationship do most of you readers feel is appropriate between teachers and students?
At the elementary level it appears to be easy for teachers to maintain their professionalism. At the junior high and high school level, however, it appears some teachers have a problem relating with students in a professional manner.
I figure the majority of teachers have no desire to be "bffs" with their students and do their best to make it clear they are the authority figure. I am sure that those teachers are more effective in the classroom and are more respected by their students. But should teachers who do not draw a distinct relational boundary line between students, be re-educated on professionalism in the classroom?
I figure that it can be difficult not to feel really "at home" when your "at school", but in actuality , as a teacher you are "at work".
Can you imagine a doctor, nurse, or lawyer talking to their patients or clients the way some of these teachers have talked to, and in the presence of, their students and co-workers?
What has happened to people that some feel that employees in the educational system (in any capacity) should be held to a lower standard that other professionals?
Educational employees are not "at work" to make friends with students and they are not "in" high school they "work at" a high school.
I have a confession to make. Normally, the only blogs I frequent directly relate to my family life, or my profession. The first night I read this blog, I only jumped on, purely out of curiosity, but the more I read the more I could not stay quiet. I continue to post because I enjoy encouraging dialog that will help promote positive change (no matter what the issue). (OK, I admit also enjoy a little pointless banter now and then, what can I say, I bore easily ;) )
Because of reading this blog, I have remembered teachers I haven't thought about in years, and it is important for me to note that the ones I have the most respect for are the ones who consistently retained their professionalism. Looking back, the ones who were trying to be "friends" or be "cool" were the ones with or mixed up in all the drama.
Anyway, to get to a point, please ask yourselves, what type of quality educator do you expect for your children? If it is someone who can offer a quality education, be a positive role model, can maintain composure under pressure, and can control their mouth, then apparently, in the least, these two teachers need to go, and it is all of yours responsibility as the parents of students in Smith County schools to demand better!
We all have to pull together if we want to make change and get rid of Lewis and Fox. I would like to challenge everyone who has been on this blog to pack the next board meeting, Dec. 16. It is time to stand behind these parents and let Lewis know we are tired of his bullying! When the board members see that that many people are not happy, maybe they will do something. They can limit his power. If they limit his power, can you imagine how red he would be then? See you on the 16th at 5:00!
I have heard that Lewis plans on Fox being the next Director of schools when he leaves. This is something that should not be tolerated by the public. Just more of the same old stuff, if not worse.
I am guessing the parents got tired of the crap... I saw the girl turn in her uniforms after the game tonight. Looks like these two teachers are getting away with everything.
Blogwatcher I PRAY you are wrong Fox becoming the director of anything would be a HUGE mistake for our county. Parents we need to stand together and make sure this never happens. She can’t handle the job she has why would someone think she can run our schools.
I hope you are mistaken about this child giving up by quitting. She has been the victim in all this and I feel very sorry that this is what she will think about for her high school years in the future. Both of these women should have to answer for the policies and rules they have broken. Don’t even get me started on the laws that have broken.
Asked around last night about what was said to the girls and yes we should be shocked. It appears that the assistant felt the need to go off on the girls by rambling about letting them do whatever they wanted from here on out including hugging & kissing on the bb floor. I am sorry but anyone that thinks that was taken out of context please tell me what else could that have meant. A coach or assitant coach telling young girls something like that has real problems. The same student that told me this story also told me that the coach was walking down the Jr. High hallway crying and calling the cheerleaders stupid for making her possibly lose her job. Note to coach you did that all on our own. Gossiping got you into this mess so maybe you should stop and think before you speak to teenagers about other teenagers. The students are watching and your antics are just making the situation worse.
Our tax dollars at work! Mr. Medley needs to call all these girls into his office and get the story. If this was said then the parents have more to go to the board with against both of these women. Ghsparent you need to brush past Medley, Lewis and Fox go to the board and demand action. Call every board member until you get someone that will listen. We do want or need these people in our school system educating our kids on or off the field.
The princess didnt quit she was told to turn in her uniforms. The coach told her Mr. Medley requested she turn them in. Not sure why he would make this request to happen at the GHS~SCHS game unless he wanted everyone to witness that this is finally over. Now we can all move on with our lives because the show is done. Queen Mom get a hobby something besides trashing SC school employees. Game Over You Lost!
ghsfan~You are so paranoid. For someone with such an imagination, I would expect more creativity in your posting. If ghsparent is Queen and the daughter is Princess, then you must be Court Jester!
Seriously, if Medley displays even a small amount of the professionalism you have attested to, then he would not make a public statement, using a student at a ball game in front of such an audience.
The uniform thing was just another part of this situation that this coach screwed up, and I am pretty sure from the sound of things she did it out of spite.
Every one of the cheerleaders were supposed to bring their uniforms in(temporarily)because of this coach's "mix up". This was just another part of the "agreement" she has managed to mess up because of her apparent inability to communicate in a professional manner. She is NOT a professional.
The only person in this situation that needs a hobby is this teacher, because apparently she is not doing her job well.
Jitterbug do you know what the agreement was to resolve this issue? Why would the coach want the cheerleaders to bring in uniforms? This is getting weirder and weirder.
kuriouskat, it seems that the cheerleader in question was supposed to get her own uniforms back and didn't. She got another girl's who quit (there have been quiet a few so far this year). At least that is what two of the cheerleaders said. They said Medley told her to give her back her original uniforms and the coach didn't. Several of the jr high students have told EVERYONE what she was saying walking down the hall after she was called into Medley's office.
ghsfan, be prepared to eat crow. Hot or cold is your choice, but you are WRONG! on all accounts. I still think you are the coach or someone closely related to her.
Looks to me like this teacher tried to make this girl look bad yet again... How much more is GHS, Lewis & Fox going to let this teacher and her assitant get away with?
Yes, it was a simple matter really, from what I understand. Just as ghs bball fan said, the girl was supposed to get her personal uniforms and was given someone else's old ones, how hard can it be just to give someone's uniforms back? Then this coach had to go and make a big production about it like everyone's got mixed up and not just the few.
The solutions offered for this situation were simple and this "lady" has made it difficult.
As for ghsfan being the coach or someone close, I seriously hope, not! That would be so sad, on so many levels.
Since all of this started I have been watching things from a distance. I can honestly say that not one person I have spoken to has had anything bad to say about this young lady. I am not sure what could be the reason for these coaches to hate this young lady so much that she wants to continue to cause her pain.
ghsfan tell us what this mom could have done that would make these coaches go after this kid n such a furious way. I am with JB I think they have self esteem issues.
Just stating it is a privilege to be a member of a team not an entitlement. The family needs to understand this. The girl quit and she in ENTITLED to nothing. They should be thankful she was allowed to come back.
All students are "entitled" to fair and respectful treatment. This teacher/coach, or whatever she claims to be, has an obligation to do what has been requested of her by her superiors.
If you know anything about this, she didn't "quit" the parents pulled her until the situation was more under control. How about we call it a "leave of absence". If you consider it that way, what do you suppose she would be "entitled" to in that situation?
I started reading this blog because I thought people were fighting for change. Why is everyone fighting and arguing over cheerleading uniforms? Do that many people really care? The girl is back we need to move to the real issues if you want to prompt change in our schools. The childish name calling is ridiculous.
Don' t be discouraged anonymous, you just jumped in during one of the little "meaningless banter" times. The uniform issue is really just a symptom of a bigger problem. Over all, policies are being discussed, more importantly they are being thought about even when people aren't reading the blog.
I agree we need CHANGE. Let’s start with Lewis and Fox. We also need to help this family in correcting their situation. There seems to be a lot of pieces to the story the administration needs to start putting the pieces together.
If I let my kids get away with small issue they consistently try me on the big ones. (Yes I am comparing adults to children)
These two women have gotten away with so much, that they apparently feel they are right in doing whatever it is they want to do. They have not been made to follow proper policy and procedure in the past so why should they think they have to now?
The "control" that Lewis and Fox feel they have and the "control" that they feel so threatened to lose, does not, in reality exist. There seems to be a complete fundamental breakdown in the way this school system works.
I wish the board would consider getting outside assistance with all of this. Someone needs to come in and re-educate our educators on how to run a more professional system. Starting with the director all the way to the janitors, everyone should be involved in the change.
To clarify, I don not mean outside help for this situation alone. I think the root of this, and other problems like this problem, have got to be addressed. Professionalism. These teachers have no business behaving this way.
Also, if the resolution passes that will allow us to vote for our director, and we all do our part, then in the future, Lewis and Fox won't be an issue.
The resolution from Smith County will be sent on to the state Rep. and senators. But if you know commisioners, county officals, or state officals in other parts of the state you need to copy the resolution from this site and send it to them. For the people to have a say this issue has to come before the state officals and it must come out of the education committee to allow the Rep. and Senators to have a chance on voting on it. The more counties and people contacting them at the state level the more likely it will be that is could be addressed. Many of the large Metro type systems like appointed and it works for them, but many smaller systems are having major problems. The resloution that Smith county passes gives the county the right to chose elected or appointed. This option gives the power back to the people. Shouldn't we have the right to chose for our own school system, that we suport with our tax dollars. So I would like to encourage you to copy this resolution and send it on to your friends all over the state. Encourage them to talk to the officals about it being voted on in their county and sent to the state. It truely is trying to allow the people a voice in their system. Start contacting you elected officals now so that when they take office they know you want to see action on the Director of Schools issue.

This is the link to the state general assembly website that has all of the house and sentate members. You just need to use the link of the left hand side of the page. Remember they may not live in our district but they are down there representing the people of there district and the state of Tennessee. They are all paid for by our tax dollars.
Since the teacher grabbed and shoved these girls what is the difference between assault and battery? Which one will the teacher be charged with if charges are filed?
Assault and battery: The intentional and unjustified use of force upon the person of another, however slight, or the intentional doing of a wanton or grossly negligent act causing personal injury to another.

ReplyDeleteI agree we need CHANGE. Let’s start with Lewis and Fox. We also need to help this family in correcting their situation. There seems to be a lot of pieces to the story the administration needs to start putting the pieces together.
ReplyDeleteThe arrogance of these two women is unbelievable. What could they be possibly thinking about to say or act this way?
ReplyDeleteIf I let my kids get away with small issue they consistently try me on the big ones. (Yes I am comparing adults to children)
ReplyDeleteThese two women have gotten away with so much, that they apparently feel they are right in doing whatever it is they want to do.

Remember they may not live in our district but they are down there representing the people of there district and the state of Tennessee. They are all paid for by our tax dollars.

Since the teacher grabbed and shoved these girls what is the difference between assault and battery? Which one will the teacher be charged with if charges are filed?
ReplyDeleteAssault and battery:
ReplyDeleteThe intentional and unjustified use of force upon the person of another, however slight, or the intentional doing of a wanton or grossly negligent act causing personal injury to another.
